The northern point of Rossøya, at 80°49′44.41″ N, is the northernmost point in Svalbard, and therefore also Norway. It is just over 1,000km from the North Pole.

Nordkapp - the North Cape in English - sits on the northern coast of the island of Magerøya and is the northernmost point in Europe connected to the mainland by road. The true northernmost point of mainland Europe is Cape Nordkinn (Kinnarodden) which lies about 5.7 km further south and about 70 km to the east of Nordkapp. And poor Cape Nordkinn is a desolate and unknown place. Reaching it is difficult: it is a rough, impressively beautiful, extreme place.

Forty-five minutes later, it arrives at Europe's dramatic northern climax. Nordkapp, or North Cape, is not technically the northernmost point - a lonely peninsula a few miles west holds that honour.

The real northernmost point of Europe. That honor belongs to the neighboring peninsula Knivskjellodden, which doesn't have any bus access and is only accessible by an 11-mile (18km) return hike. There are three places that claim to be Europe's northernmost point: Kinnarodden, Knivskjelodden, and the North Cape, all three in Norway. So, I took a map and Knivskjelodden seemed to be the real northernmost point (71° 11′ 08″ NB). Knivskjelodden can, unlike the North Cape, not be reached by car (nor by bike).
